Area information and Favourite Links

"Lafage" is a small village surrounded by rolling fields and hills in the Aude, a western region of the Languedoc, and just a few kilometres from the boundary of the Ariege, which is in the Midi Pyrenees.

Mirepoix is a 12 kms drive to the south.  It is a beautiful medeival market town where there are most local amenities, including a selection of restaurants/cafés/bars, and an indoor/outdoor all-year-round swimming pool, tennis, etc.

The largest town is Castelnaudary (a 20-minute drive to the north of Lafage) where there is a motorway intersection
linking Toulouse, Carcassonne and the Mediterranean coast.
With a population of approx. 12,000, the town provides all major amenities including supermarkets, banks, bars and restaurants, an all-year round swimming pool complex and tennis courts (indoor and outdoor) and is on the train line.
There are also pleasant walks along the Canal du Midi towpath and its large basin where barges and visiting yachts turn and moor.

Swimming and wind-sailing can be enjoyed at either the large reservoir "La Ganguise" (20 mins drive) or at the pretty lake St. Ferréol, which has picnic areas within the pine trees bordering the waterfront, about 45 minutes drive away and which is near to the attractive market town of Revel to the north.
There is also swimming and wind-sailing at Montbel, to the south-east of Mirepoix.

This area is particularly beautiful with a huge variation in its scenery, ranging from the surrounding small undulating hills to the wine growing areas of the Minervois and the Corbières, with the lovely Montagne Noire to the north, and the drama of the Pyrenees to the south.

The medieval castle of Carcassonne has been used many a time as a backdrop to films.  During the high season there are numerous attractions and a 3-week theatre festival of national and international artists, as well as the spectacular fireworks Celebration of the Revolution on the 14th July.

Toulouse (a ¾ - 1 hour drive away) is a vibrant city with so much to see and do ~ it has beautiful architecture and is known in France as "la ville rose" because of its lovely pink brick buildings.  It is a university town and, combined with the Airbus and Aerospace bases, this encourages a wide choice of cultural activities, restaurants and shopping.

History abounds in the many Cathar eagle's-nest Châteaux and the various villages within the region connected with that period of time.
Albi, with its famous cathedral and the Lautrec museum, is about a 3 hour drive away.

The Mediterranean coast (approx. an 1¼ hour's drive) provides excellent beaches.
The Pyrenees (with their beautiful walks and scenery, as well as a selection of ski slopes and spa towns), Andorra (for duty free shopping) and Spain are all within easy reach.

Gerona and Barcelona
Many home owners, especially those living in the midlands and north
of England, choose the option of flying into these Spanish airports.
.
These routes often offer an extra option on ticket availability, cheap flight prices, and with the added attraction that car hire is usually far more reasonable in Spain than in France.
The driving is often easier on this side of the journey than driving from the north of England to the London airports.
These airports now offer a huge range of destinations in UK and other countries .......
e.g. Ryanair serves 65 destinations from Gerona
and 75 destinations from Barcelona.
Other airlines include British Airways, Easyjet, Thomson, and Jet2
